Virtual Surround from Final Sound

The Cedia Expo, held September 5-9 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, is where all the A/V action is at this time of the year. And this month will see the release of a high-end product from Final Sound solutions: a 2.1 Stereo and Virtual Surround Sound receiver.

The package includes a DVD Receiver (shown in pic) with 75W class D, Dolby Virtual Surround DSP and complete AV switching module HDMI in and out, universal remote etc. This can go with Final Sound speakers such as the 901, 150i etc.

The virtual surround effect is created with only two front speakers and a subwoofer by processing the signal coming (for instance) from a 5.1 DVD. The processing of the signal is based on the Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) Algorithm.

The company has incorporated a DSP algorithm that processes the signal from the DVD receiver, which works like this:
The front signal speaker signal comes straight through the front speakers, unprocessed.
The center speaker function is created by applying the HTRF algorithm on the center speaker signal coming from the DVD playing through the front speakers, which results in a virtual center channel – theoretically in the middle of the two speakers.
The surround speaker functions are created by applying the HTRF algorithm on the surround speaker function coming from the DVD playing through the front speakers by applying of a time delay, a phase shift, and a comb filter function through the algorithm. This results in an effect of two virtual surround speakers positioned to the left and the right of the consumer.
